If you are reliable, trustworthy, persistent, have a reliable mode of transportation, and able to follow the directions of how to file paperwork with courts, this could be a business idea for you! A legal courier is a person who shuttles around legal documents - not particularly challenging, but it is only a job for a responsible person. You'll need to be able to bring documents to various places to be signed, bring them back, file paperwork with different courts, and you'll need to be able to do these things on a very tight schedule. If all of this does not bother you, read on!
You might be wondering what you could charge for offering a service such as this. You should be able to charge $100 per day of work or $500 a month, and be immediately available when summoned. It is amazing to think that you could make this much money providing a service like this, but it is true. The courts are notoriously jammed and slow, so lawyers, judges, and court assistants will pay top dollar to get their work done in an expedient manner!
In order to start a business like this you will need an extensive background check in order to show that you can be trusted with important legal documents. You can go to your local police department to figure out the best way to document your excellent (and therefore, nonexistent) police record. A driver license and credit check should also be completed; if you have a good record on all accounts, it tells your future employers that you are a person to be trusted, and you will get jobs quickly.
To keep the important legal documents you are carrying safe, you should make an investment in a lockable box or case, (A fireproof safe or briefcase would be even better) and carry your client's documents in this safe box or briefcase at all times. Your good reputation rests on the fact that legal documents are always safe in your hands!
You will also need to prepare for a lot of traveling, so make sure that you invest in a reliable, comfortable, vehicle that is economical on gas. You will probably be spending at least half of your work hours in this vehicle. Keeping the paperwork in a trunk, or even in a locked safe placed within the trunk, is probably a good idea too.
This is also a type of business that would be good to carry business cards with you. You will meet a lot of potential clients in your daily routine, so having a ready supply of business cards will make it easier for them to hire you for your services! You should also dress professionally since you will be frequenting lawyers' offices and courthouses. If you want people to take you seriously, you need to dress and act the part. There are many people in the judicial system that would love a courier to work for them, and if you are dependable and punctual, this could be a very easy and rewarding job for you!
