Minister Says Priority Is To Keep People Riding

Posted by Howard Trott on Monday, October 21, 2013 Under: Motorcycle News
Motorcycle riding government minister Mike Pennington says he's on a mission to make life safer, simpler and fairer for motorcyclists, and remove some of the many hurdles that put people off. Speaking to the BMF's government relations executive, Chris Hodder, Penning was keen to stress the importance of not only training riders, but also educating them in the importance of being properly equipped for riding. 'Its not so much about getting people on two wheels, but rather getting people to stay on two wheels and stay safe', said Penning, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport.

Motorcycles are, he said, ' an enormous benefit for the environment because they give off less emissions and cause fewer traffic problems than a car'. He said Prime Minister David Cameron had urged him to 'push back as strongly as possible' on red tape he didn't like, such as the European Commission's Type Approval proposals, which would make it much harder for owners to modify their motorcycles. Asked why it was taking so long to come up with an improved riding test, he said, 'getting it wrong would be devastating to the industry, motorcyclists and indeed, Britain.'
